President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Macron Discuss Security in Mozambique and DRC

Foreword

In a recent bilateral meeting between Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, critical security issues in northern Mozambique and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were at the forefront. The discussion held at the Élysée Palace highlighted the ongoing security challenges in these regions and the collaborative efforts being made to address them.

Main Points Discussed

President Samia and President Macron engaged in discussions concerning peace and security in northern Mozambique and the eastern DRC. This meeting comes at a crucial time as Tanzania’s People Defence Forces (TPDF) have been actively involved in both regions under the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) missions. The Sadc Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) is set to conclude by July 2024, but Tanzanian troops will continue their presence in a bilateral agreement.

“The two leaders discussed issues pertaining to peace and security in northern Mozambique and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo,” – Ms Zuhura Yunus, Director of Presidential Communications.

Tanzania’s military involvement in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, has been significant due to the security challenges posed by terrorist attacks that have disrupted operations, including those of TotalEnergies, a French oil giant with a $20 billion investment in a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) project in the region.

“Yes, our soldiers will continue their stay in Mozambique beyond July 15. It is not a unique thing, there are several such bilateral arrangements in Mozambique with other countries,” – Defence Minister Stergomena Tax.

The Sadc Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) aimed to support the Congolese government in restoring peace and security in the eastern part of the country, which has experienced conflicts and instability fueled by armed groups.

Conclusion

The meeting between President Samia Suluhu Hassan and President Emmanuel Macron holds significant importance for Africa, particularly in addressing the security challenges in northern Mozambique and the eastern DRC. The continued collaboration between Tanzania and France, along with the involvement of Sadc missions, demonstrates a commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. As these discussions progress, it is crucial for African countries to work together to combat threats and ensure the safety and well-being of their citizens.
